There will be no compromise on the basic structure of the constitution: Gagan Thapa

"The multiparty parliamentary system, separation of powers, an independent judiciary, freedom of expression and the press, the rule of law, the principle of proportional inclusion, an open society, and human rights are the fundamental pillars of the Constitution. These elements can be broadened or expanded, but anything that seeks to curtail them is absolutely unacceptable to the Nepali Congress party."

LALITPUR:- Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has made it clear that the party will not compromise on the fundamental aspects of the Constitution and democratic values.

He expressed this view while speaking at a program titled “The Nepali Congress’s Perspective on Constitutional Amendment,” held on Thursday at the party’s central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur. President Thapa stated that principles such as democracy, the republic, federalism, the parliamentary system of governance, and proportional inclusive representation are non-negotiable for the Nepali Congress.

“The Nepali Congress party has already made it clear—through its election manifesto, party statute, and Central Working Committee decisions—that it will not compromise on the fundamental tenets of the Constitution, such as democracy, the republic, federalism, the parliamentary system of governance, and the multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multicultural nature of the nation, as well as proportional inclusive representation,” he said. “We have explicitly stated this in our manifesto, our statute, and all other relevant documents.”

He asserted that no compromise could be made on these matters, noting that they had already been clarified by the party’s statute and decisions of the Central Working Committee. President Thapa expressed the view that certain provisions of the Constitution need to be amended to make democracy result-oriented, further empower citizens, and streamline good governance and service delivery.

He said, “The multiparty parliamentary system, separation of powers, an independent judiciary, freedom of expression and the press, the rule of law, the principle of proportional inclusion, an open society, and human rights are the fundamental pillars of the Constitution. These elements can be broadened or expanded, but anything that seeks to curtail them is absolutely unacceptable to the Nepali Congress party.”

He made it clear that the Nepali Congress itself would play a leading and proactive role in the necessary amendment process to make the constitution more inclusive and citizen-friendly.
