‘Number of Media outlets increased excessively and needs to be regulated’

KATHMANDU:- Ganesh Parajuli, Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Party of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, (RSP), has stated that the number of media outlets has increased excessively and needs to be regulated.

He made these remarks on Monday during a discussion with media personnel. He emphasized the need to establish minimum standards to make parliamentary affairs journalism more organized, dignified, and effective.

Parajuli stated that necessary training should be arranged in coordination with the Parliament Secretariat to enhance the effectiveness of journalists reporting on parliamentary affairs.

He said, “While there used to be only one or two media outlets in the past, the number of media outlets has increased tremendously today. As we work to systematize this sector, the process of drafting and refining the Terms of Reference (ToR) is crucial. Furthermore, you yourselves have highlighted the need for training to enable media personnel covering parliamentary affairs to work more effectively. This is indeed a matter worth serious consideration. We also need to work on how to implement this effectively in coordination with the Parliament Secretariat. The media sector bears just as much accountability as the Members of Parliament.”

Refuting the suggestion that there was an attempt to curb the media, he stated that the party remains committed to press freedom.
