Public court documents reveal that Trump administration politically targeted Governor Newsom

"Gavin Newsom was holding a press conference, so they decided to march from the federal building to the location where the press conference was taking place. They arrested a few people outside and stood there to draw media attention... Bovino made some remarks, and then they left and returned to the (federal) building."

LOS ANGELES:- Recently released federal court documents and internal text messages confirm that the “immigration raids” conducted by the Trump administration—occurring outside a rally organized by Governor Gavin Newsom last summer in support of the “Election Rigging Response Act”—were a politically motivated “stunt,” a fact the Governor had insisted upon from the very beginning.

According to evidence presented in federal court, Homeland Security Investigations personnel described the raid as a “political agenda” and a “stunt.” Furthermore, they acknowledged that agents were pulled from other routine law enforcement activities to carry out the operation in proximity to Governor Newsom’s August 14, 2025, press conference.

Governor Gavin Newsom said, “Employees of Trump’s own immigration enforcement agency have put it in writing: they were ordered to target a political rally, a move right out of the dictator’s playbook. They weren’t chasing dangerous criminals or doing targeted enforcement — their bosses wanted a stunt. The federal government should never be used as a weapon against political opponents or their families. This is an abuse of power, and every American, regardless of party, should be deeply concerned.”

A message from a Homeland Security employee stated, “Gavin Newsom was holding a press conference, so they decided to march from the federal building to the location where the press conference was taking place. They arrested a few people outside and stood there to draw media attention… Bovino made some remarks, and then they left and returned to the (federal) building.”

Another exchange states, “They essentially crashed Newsom’s press conference.” “We were pulled away from our work at [Home Depot] and the car wash to carry out this stunt.”

And another exchange says, “We were asked to assist with targeted law enforcement. That wasn’t targeted law enforcement. It was just a political agenda.”

In a sworn statement accompanying those messages, an agent says, “They marched to the Democratic governor’s press conference venue. It appeared entirely political. There didn’t seem to be any solid operational basis for doing so. It struck me as political.”

He says, “…the overall aggressive style displayed by the Border Patrol while conducting this mission appeared somewhat excessive… it seemed to be advancing toward public areas… and the operation appeared to be shifting from being targeted to becoming uncontrolled or indiscriminate.”

The August 14 operation was no coincidence. Federal agents appeared at a press conference alongside Governor Newsom and other California leaders—an event held at a critical political juncture to counter partisan redistricting efforts in Texas. The timing and purpose described by officials raise serious questions about whether federal law enforcement was utilized to shape the political narrative at the height of election-season debates.

These newly released court records directly contradict the Trump administration’s repeated public claims that the immigration raids were unrelated to Governor Newsom.

These revelations come after Governor Newsom repeatedly warned that the Trump administration was weaponizing federal law enforcement against political opponents. In recent weeks, the Governor demanded records from Trump’s Justice Department regarding its politically motivated investigations and condemned the DOJ’s unprecedented efforts to target both the Governor and members of his family.

Beyond exposing the political nature of these operations, court filings reveal deeply offensive racist remarks exchanged by some agents, including slurs used to describe Latinos and immigrants. The same records depict a politically driven enforcement strategy, indiscriminate sweeps, and an inhumane attitude toward the people caught up in them.

The Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that its immigration raids are about removing dangerous criminals. The evidence tells a different story. Their strategy has generated headlines regarding quotas and consequences for public safety. Families have been separated.

Parents have been detained while on their way to work. U.S. citizens and immigrants have been wrongfully detained. Californians have been wrongfully deported. Communities have been terrorized by indiscriminate sweeps. Businesses have lost revenue and workers.

And now, according to recently released court records, the agents themselves describe being diverted from enforcement duties to carry out what they call “stunts” and a “political agenda.” That is not public safety. That is the weaponization of federal law enforcement for political gain.
