RSP stated, “The judiciary will be restructured, but through the parliament.”
KATHMANDU:- The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has concluded that the parliamentary process is the only constitutional option for resolving the recent controversies within the judiciary.
A meeting of the party’s secretariat, held on Saturday at its central office in Chamati, determined that the role of Parliament is indispensable for the comprehensive restructuring of the judiciary.
According to party spokesperson Jagadish Kharel, the judicial controversies that have recently surfaced on social media and in the media cannot be resolved solely by the courts or the Judicial Council. When asked about the possibility of impeachment, Kharel clarified that the outcome would only be determined once the matter enters the parliamentary process.
He stated that the process for restructuring the judicial sector must be initiated through the parliament. “If the judicial sector is to be restructured, the parliament is the constitutional avenue for doing so. We have already directed the parliamentary party to advance the necessary procedures. It is essential to follow the process first; subsequent decisions will then be determined by the parliamentary outcome,” he said.
Similarly, Kharel stated that the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has taken the recent incidents of the rounding up and arrest of journalists very seriously. He emphasized that, despite being part of the government, the party remains firmly committed to press freedom and human rights.
He noted that as soon as the arrests of the journalists came to light, the party drew the government’s attention to the matter through social media and official correspondence. “This incident was wrong, and it must not be repeated,” he said.
Noting that the Secretariat meeting expressed serious concern regarding the incident—which involved a government body—Kharel stated that the government has been urged to take action against those responsible, regardless of who they may be. “The Secretariat meeting has called for an in-depth study and investigation into the matter, and has urged the government to take action against the guilty, whoever they might be,” he said.
Noting that the journalists had already been released following the Prime Minister’s directive, Kharel stated that the party had issued a firm instruction to the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the facts of the case.
