Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has clarified that the party’s special general convention was held in accordance with the statute and was legally valid. Addressing the second national conference of the Nepal Democratic Indigenous Nationalities Federation—a sister organization of the Congress—he stated that the special general convention was conducted by exercising the provisions of the party’s statute and the rights of its sovereign members.
Thapa said, “A special general convention was not only necessary; it was also a matter of our right. Its legitimacy has already been affirmed by the general convention hall, the Election Commission, and even the Division Bench of the honorable Supreme Court.”
Chairman Thapa stated that the court had called for re-verification, and he viewed this as an opportunity to re-establish the legitimacy of his faction.
He pledged to unite the Congress party by resolving internal rifts. He stated that he would build a Congress party that the new generation could take pride in. He said, “We must revitalize the party without letting its soul die. It is our responsibility to ensure that the current generation can take the same pride in the Congress that our predecessors did.”
A meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee has been called for Shrawan 24, (August 9), coinciding with the Supreme Court’s order to review the verdict that had granted legitimacy to the special general convention. According to General Secretary Gururaj Ghimire, the meeting has been convened to deliberate on and reach decisions regarding the party’s 15th General Convention, organizational structure, internal unity, and contemporary political issues.
Similarly, the faction led by former President Sher Bahadur Deuba is also organizing a ‘national gathering’ starting on Shrawan 29. General Secretary Ghimire stated that the objective of any gathering or program within the party should be to strengthen and consolidate the party. Noting that organizing a gathering is not unusual in itself, he clarified that its relevance depends on its objective.
Dr. Shashank Koirala, coordinator of the gathering’s organizing committee and former General Secretary of the Congress party, has stated that the Supreme Court’s order for a review regarding the party’s official status has increased the likelihood of party unity. According to him, former President Deuba will also participate in the gathering; he is scheduled to return to the country on Shrawan 28, (August 13).
