Pia Dandiya wins Democratic primary in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District
FLORIDA:- Pia Dandiya, a candidate of Indian origin running for Congress from Florida’s District 22, was elected in the primary election held on August 18.
After winning the primary, Dandia said in a Facebook post, “Thank you to the residents of Florida’s District 22 (FL-22) for believing in this campaign. Together, we will advance the mission to lower the cost of living, end corruption, and make Washington work for us again. I am grateful to be doing this work alongside you.”
Dandia, a first-generation Indian-American born to immigrant parents in Palm Beach County, Florida, said, “Tonight we celebrate. Tomorrow, we get back to work to win the November election!”
Dandia holds a bachelor’s degree in Government from Harvard University and a master’s degree in Education from Boston University, completed in partnership with ‘Teach For America.’
Having worked as a high school principal in Harlem, White House Fellow and Apple, Dandiya brings extensive community experience to her congressional campaign.
After easily defeating her Democratic rival in the primary election with over 68 percent of the vote, Dandiya is now set to face Republican candidate Casey Oskard in the November 3 general election.
In July, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) placed District 22 on its “Red to Blue” list—designating districts likely to flip from Republican to Democratic control—hoping for a victory by Dandia in November.
Congratulating Dandia on her victory, ‘Indian American Impact’ stated, “FL-22 is one of the DCCC’s ‘Red to Blue’ targets and a key ‘flip’ opportunity nationwide for Democrats striving to regain the majority in the U.S. House this November. If elected, Dandia would become the first South Asian American to represent Florida in Congress.”
Following her victory, Chintan Patel, Executive Director of ‘Indian American Impact,’ said, “As the daughter of immigrants, she understands exactly what is at stake, and she will be a powerful advocate for immigrant rights in Congress.” ‘Impact’ is eager to “do everything in its power” to ensure her victory in November.
