Indian American Pramila Jayapal won primary election by securing more than 80 percent votes
LOS ANGELES:- Indian-origin Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal has secured her path to victory in the race for Washington State’s 7th Congressional District, having garnered over 80 percent of the vote in the preliminary results.
With this primary victory, her campaign for the general election in November has officially begun. She achieved this result by securing more than 80 percent of the votes in the preliminary tally announced on August 4.
Under Washington state’s ‘top-two’ primary system, the two candidates receiving the most votes—regardless of party affiliation—advance to the general election in November.
Democratic candidate Jayapal has been continuously elected since 2017 and is running for her sixth term.
After the results were announced, Jayapal thanked the voters of the 7th Congressional District for their support and pledged to continue advancing what she described as a “bold progressive agenda.”
Expressing gratitude to the broad coalition that supported her re-election campaign, Jayapal stated that labor unions, environmental groups, reproductive rights organizations, elected officials, local Democratic committees, and volunteers all contributed to this victory.
Outlining her priorities for the upcoming term, Jayapal reiterated her commitment to campaign finance reform and policies that support working families. She stated that she would continue to advocate for affordable healthcare, a lower cost of living, and expanded access to housing.
Jayapal said, “I am fully committed to fighting against the influence of big money that dominates politics and to standing up for the country’s workers and the poor; they deserve not just to survive, but to live prosperous lives. I am fighting to establish healthcare as a human right and to ensure that housing, food, and fuel are affordable.”
