Nepal to send 136 athletes to participate in 22 sports at Asian Games
KATHMANDU:- A total of 136 athletes from Nepal—comprising 80 men and 56 women—will participate in 22 sports disciplines at the 20th Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Saroj Kumar Pokharel, Chief of the Sports Development Department under the National Sports Council, confirmed the participation figures, noting that there are 32 coaches accompanying the team.
Participants from Nepal will include one male and one female in archery; four men and two women in athletics; two men and two women in badminton; four men and three women in boxing; two men in canoe slalom; a 15-member men’s cricket team; one male and one female in cycling; and one male athlete in dance and sports.
Similarly, Nepal will be represented by 3 men and 1 woman in golf; 3 men and 3 women in judo; 12 men and 12 women in kabaddi; 3 men and 5 women in karate; 2 men in skateboarding; 3 men and 1 woman in soft tennis; 1 man and 1 woman in squash; 3 men and 2 women in swimming; 3 men and 3 women in table tennis; 2 men in taekwondo; 3 men and 2 women in tennis; 12 women in volleyball; 4 men and 2 women in wrestling; and 8 men and 3 women in wushu.
A total of 253 athletes from Nepal—comprising 126 men and 127 women—participated in 29 sports disciplines at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.
Nepal won one silver and one bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Karateka Erika Gurung secured the silver medal, while the women’s kabaddi team won the bronze. It was the debut appearance for both at the Asian Games. The 20th Asian Games is set to begin on Asoj 3.
