Incessant rain triggers landslides, floods in Nawalpur

NAWALPARASI:- Incidents of landslides and flooding have increased in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) following the incessant rainfall. The district has witnessed the incidences of roadways obstructions, while 35 people have been displaced after waters inundated their houses at various parts of the district. 

According to the District Police Office Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), floodwaters damaged at Danchok area of Gaindakot municipality-4. As a result, 35 people from eight houses have taken shelter at the homes of their relatives and neighbors.

Although no human or livestock casualties have been reported, the details of the overall damage are being collected, Yubaraj Khadka, Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East).

In Gaindakot Municipality, around 20 quintals of rice and clothes were soaked in rainwater and drain water entering the lower floor of the house of Ward Chairman Premraj Timilsina.

Superintendent of Police Khadka said that a police team has been mobilized from the temporary police post Beldiha to carry out rescue operations.  The Kaligandaki Corridor road section near Chisapani in Gaindakot Municipality-3 has remained blocked by a landslide on Monday night. The landslip caused the falling of trees onto the roadway.

It is said that a police team has been deployed at the site to provide necessary support and coordinate response efforts.

Earlier, a local road at Rumjhatar was blocked following an increased water-level in the local Ratikhola (stream) along the border of Hupsekot rural municipality-4 and 5. Similarly, the access from Jhyalbas to Hupsekot Ward No 6 office has remained disrupted  after a landslide occurred at Badakhola.

Until the filing of this report, efforts are underway to clear the roads at both locations in coordination with the police and local levels in both places. With landslides and flooding on the rise, incidents of road disruption have also increased across the district. As rainfall continues, police said monitoring has been intensified along riverbanks, hills roads and vulnerable settlements.  (RSS)
