Crowds gather at special screening of Nepal’s first color film ‘Kumari’

KATHMANDU:- Nepal’s first color film, ‘Kumari’, was screened specially on Monday at the Film Development Board’s hall in Chabahil, Kathmandu.

The screening was part of the Board’s ‘Old is Gold’ special film series, bringing together the film’s creators and contemporary audiences to watch the movie together after decades. The special screening saw an enthusiastic turnout, resulting in a ‘housefull’ audience.

To make the screening even more special, the film’s lead actress Chaitya Devi Singh, actor Gautam Ratna Tuladhar, and cinematographer Manju Kumar Shrestha were personally present. The artists appeared emotional as they watched their younger selves on the big screen once again, while the new generation of viewers was excited to see historical figures right before their eyes.

Following the screening, Board member Ganesh Prasad Subedi facilitated an interaction with the film’s team. During the session, actress Chaitya Devi and cinematographer Shrestha recounted their fascinating and challenging journeys, reflecting on how the production of the first color film was made possible amidst the limited technology and resources of that era.

Ganesh Subedi, a member of the Film Development Board, stated that for the older generation, this exhibition serves as a trip down memory lane and an occasion for reunions, while for the new generation, it offers a rare opportunity to understand the technical evolution and historical foundations of Nepali cinema.
