Calaveras County’s ‘Gyan Fire’ spread across 2,100 acres

LOS ANGELES:- Amidst scorching heat and gusty winds, the ‘Gyan Fire’ that broke out late Monday in Calaveras County spread rapidly within a few hours, affecting an area of 1,800 acres. The fire has not yet been brought under control.

A fire broke out around 5:30 PM on Monday just south of Hogan Lake, near Hogan Dam Road and Gyaan Road. The area affected is primarily rural. The fire, which covered 310 acres by 8:00 PM, expanded to 1,800 acres by 11:30 PM. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Mandatory evacuations are now in effect. A map of the latest evacuation orders is available via Genasys. An evacuation center is open at the Jenny Lind Community Center, located at 189 Pine Street in Valley Springs.

Helicopters were deployed to conduct water drops throughout the night, taking advantage of cooler weather and the increased effectiveness of the water drops. Cal Fire stated that “massive resources” had been dispatched to the area to fight the fire. Late Monday, the fire was “actively burning toward the 2020 Walker Fire burn scar,” Cal Fire said. That fire had burned approximately 1,400 acres.

According to information provided by Cal Fire on Tuesday, the Gyaan Fire spread to 2,100 acres overnight. “It is still showing moderate spread with 0% containment; however, additional resources are continuing to respond to the area for the day shift.

Hot temperatures are expected again on Tuesday, with highs nearing 99 degrees. Winds are expected to remain calm, with west-southwest winds at 6 mph in the afternoon. Aerial firefighting resources returned to the skies early Tuesday morning.”
