Garima Chaudhary murder case: Three-point agreement reached between government and victim’s family
KATHMANDU:- An agreement has been reached between the Government of Nepal and the family of Garima Chaudhary—an innocent young girl from Dashadhuri, Jitpur-Simara Sub-metropolitan City-1, Bara district—regarding the incident of her murder.
Following discussions at the Ministry of Home Affairs involving the Home Minister, ministers from relevant ministries, and the victim’s family, an agreement was signed with a commitment to immediately initiate various measures.
In accordance with the agreement reached between the government and the families of the victims, the provisions regarding offenses and punishments in existing laws concerning heinous crimes are set to be reviewed.
To this end, a decision has been made by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs to form a seven-member ‘Garima Nyaya Sankalpa Samiti’ (Dignity and Justice Resolution Committee) tasked with submitting a report containing recommendations for drafting legislation within seven days. The government believes this move will pave the way for amending existing laws to ensure severe punishment for perpetrators of heinous crimes that shock and shame society.
Similarly, in accordance with the request of the parents of the girl, Garima Chaudhary, an agreement has been reached for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development to take the necessary steps—in coordination with the local level—to erect a statue in her memory. Furthermore, the bereaved parents will perform the funeral rites in accordance with their own customs and traditions.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Government of Nepal by the Minister for Home Affairs; Minister for Infrastructure Development; Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs; Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security; and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment; while the victim’s father, Manoj Kumar Chaudhary, and mother, Gyanmati Chaudhary, signed on behalf of the victim’s family.
