USCIS To Require Electronic Filing of Forms starting on August 11
WASHINGTON:- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a directive mandating electronic filing (e-filing) for specific immigration forms processed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
USCIS will require that any immigration forms that have been available for electronic filing for at least 180 days be submitted online in the future.
Before mandating electronic registration for any form, USCIS will notify the public via its website at least 60 days in advance. Individuals filing a form must use an online account to submit the immigration form to USCIS; this can be done by filling out the form online or by uploading a PDF file of the completed form and supporting evidence.
This initiative will eliminate reliance on the U.S. Treasury Department’s physical ‘lockbox’ services and accelerate the process of transitioning fee payments to an electronic system.
According to the DHS, electronic registration enhances fraud detection capabilities and streamlines identity management—as data is easier to collect, store, and access compared to paper forms—while also strengthening national security screening through rapid data access and expanded analytical capabilities. It is reported that electronic registration reduces errors, incomplete applications, and processing times, making the decision-making process both transparent and efficient.
Electronic filing is already the standard practice for most USCIS forms; the process of electronically filing benefit requests for foreign nationals is not new. Applicants unable to file electronically may request an exemption.
According to the DHS, this ‘interim final rule’ will take effect on August 11, 2026.
