KATHMANDU:- The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) has demanded a constitutional amendment to ensure the continuity of citizenship for descendants.
The full meeting of the association held last week decided to request the new government to ensure the continuity of citizenship for descendants through constitutional amendment.
The meeting, chaired by the president of the association, Dr. Hemraj Sharma, has also decided to take necessary initiatives to amend Article 291 of the constitution.
Earlier, in the 40-page document titled ‘100 Resolutions’ of the National Independent Party (RSP), point number 99 mentioned Nepali citizenship, voting rights and the establishment of a ‘National Knowledge Bank’.
The association has expressed confidence that the demands of the NRNs will be addressed once the government is formed under the leadership of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Chairman Dr. Sharma said that there is no need to submit a separate memorandum to the new government and that the demands will be fulfilled only if the commitments included in the RSSS manifesto are implemented.
The call for constitutional amendment is becoming stronger as the current constitutional system has made the demand for continuity of citizenship, which has been raised by non-resident Nepalis for more than two decades, more complicated.
