KATHMANDU:- Prime Minister’s advisor Asim Shah has indicated that the government will soon take a ‘revolutionary decision’ to ensure the continuity of citizenship acquired by descent.
Speaking at a discussion program organized on Tuesday at the initiative of the Rastriya Swatantra Party’s Expatriate Nepali Liaison Department, Shah clarified that the government is positive about addressing the long-standing demands of expatriate Nepalis. This information was provided by Pawan Sharma, the chair of the department’s UK branch.
The team participating in the meeting presented a clear stance and concrete suggestions regarding the need to ensure the continuity of Nepali citizenship—originally acquired by descent—for first-generation Nepalis who have obtained foreign citizenship or passports. Sharma stated that emphasis was also placed on incorporating this provision into the proposal submitted for constitutional amendment.
Advisor Shah stated that the government is committed to ensuring the continuity of citizenship by descent and offered a confident assurance that a “revolutionary decision” on this matter would be forthcoming. Sharma expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved through a constitutional amendment.
Non-resident Nepalis believe that the implementation of this provision will not only fulfill the long-standing aspirations of hundreds of thousands of Nepalis living abroad but also accelerate the inflow of investment, knowledge, skills, and experience into Nepal, thereby opening doors to new possibilities for economic development.
