KATHMANDU:- A regional workshop aimed at strengthening aviation safety oversight and introducing next-generation flight simulation technologies began in Kathmandu on Tuesday under the European Union–South Asia Aviation Partnership Project.
Funded by the European Union and implemented by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the two-day programme is being hosted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). It brings together aviation authorities, technical specialists and industry representatives from Nepal and across South Asia to discuss regulatory oversight and operational use of modern Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTDs), including emerging Extended Reality (XR) technologies.
A key attraction of the workshop is the on-site demonstration of a Virtual Reality-based H125 (AS350) Flight Simulation Training Device developed by Loft Dynamics in cooperation with Airbus Helicopters. The simulator allows participants to experience complex operational environments, including mountain flying scenarios that closely mirror Nepal’s demanding terrain.
Addressing the opening session, EU Ambassador to Nepal Veronique Lorenzo said safe and reliable aviation is fundamental to Nepal’s connectivity, tourism and economic development, stressing that innovation must go hand in hand with strong regulatory oversight.
Nepal’s challenging geography and weather conditions make high-quality pilot training and effective supervision critical. Advanced simulation technologies provide a safe and efficient platform to enhance pilot proficiency, reduce operational risks and support more sustainable aviation practices.
The workshop forms part of a broader schedule of EU-supported aviation cooperation activities planned in Nepal throughout 2026, including further technical engagements in June and later in the year, reflecting continued partnership in strengthening aviation safety systems and regulatory capacity.
