Missing Sherpa on Mount Everest rescued safely from Khumbu Icefall
SOLUKHUMBU:- Dawa Sherpa, a mountaineering guide from Khijidemba Rural Municipality in Okhaldhunga who went missing near the third camp (Camp-3) of Mount Everest, has been rescued safely.
He was found by the staff of the Everest Pollution Control Committee on Thursday morning while he was crawling towards the base camp near the crampon point at the Khumbu Icefall in an extremely weak condition, according to the District Police Office, Solukhumbu.
Altitude Air’s helicopter was deployed to the area on Wednesday to search for the Sherpa after he went missing. The helicopter searched from the Everest Base Camp, which is at an altitude of 5,200 meters, to below Camp III.
Tourism professionals say that being found alive in six days is a miracle in itself. It is considered extraordinary to be able to survive for so long at an altitude of more than seven thousand meters, amidst lack of oxygen, extreme cold, blizzards and fatigue.
The Sherpa’s fingers have been damaged by frost and he has been taken to Kathmandu for further treatment. Police have said that the Sherpa went missing from the third camp area on Jestha 15 while returning from the Everest summit.
