DHS concerned over Essex County’s announcement to release immigrants charged under sanctuary policy
"Sanctuary policies make New Jersey communities unsafe. In Essex County, instead of notifying ICE law enforcement, sanctuary politicians are releasing criminals from jail into New Jersey communities. Politicians in sanctuary jurisdictions have refused to cooperate with ICE law enforcement, thereby jeopardizing the safety of the public and our officers. This also necessitates a larger presence to arrest criminals on a broad scale, rather than handling them within the controlled setting of a jail."
WASHINGTON:- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expressed serious concern after Essex County, New Jersey, passed a resolution prioritizing a sanctuary policy and announcing the release of undocumented immigrants—who are accused of various crimes—from the county jail.
According to a statement issued by the DHS, the Essex County Board of County Commissioners passed a proposal restricting the use of county property and resources to assist in civil immigration enforcement activities. These sanctuary policies were officially implemented on July 9.
According to DHS, these changes will negatively impact ICE’s ability to execute direct custody transfers from the Essex County Jail and will necessitate additional operational resources to locate and arrest criminal illegal immigrants. To protect U.S. citizens in Essex County from public safety threats, ICE law enforcement will need to increase its reliance on field enforcement operations and additional resources.
Assistant Secretary Lauren Bisse said, “Sanctuary policies make New Jersey communities unsafe. This also necessitates a larger presence to arrest criminals on a broad scale, rather than handling them within the controlled setting of a jail.”
Meanwhile, ICE has announced the arrest of Honduran immigrant Carlos Humberto Perez-Sosa, Uzbekistan national Nazarjon Gayratjonovich Abdukahorov, and Peruvians Carlos Capuro and Johannes Cuadros-Almanza, all of whom are accused of various crimes.
