Refining German ties: Dr. Kofler’s four-day mission focuses on flood recovery and bilateral growth
By Kaushal Ghimire, KATHMANDU:- Dr. Bärbel Kofler’s four-day official visit to Nepal carried significance well beyond standard diplomatic protocol. As Parliamentary State Secretary to Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dr. Kofler traveled to the country to evaluate bilateral partnerships in energy, health, and economic development, while directly assessing the devastation left by the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood.
During her travels, Dr. Kofler visited Nuwakot District to inspect flood-affected areas firsthand. In Bidur, she met with local authorities, healthcare workers, and international aid organizations to review ongoing humanitarian relief efforts. Moving to Kathmandu, she held high-level discussions with Minister of Finance, Dr. Swarnim Waglé, focusing on national energy infrastructure, post-disaster reconstruction challenges, and German financial support.
Public health and human rights remained central themes throughout her itinerary. In a meeting with Minister of Health and Food Safety Nisha Mehta, Dr. Kofler discussed health sector recovery following the disaster and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation.
She also toured the Germany-supported Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital to observe initiatives expanding public healthcare capacities. Concluding her engagements, Dr. Kofler sat down with civil society leaders to discuss human rights protections, addressing topics that included last year’s Gen-Z uprisings and the ongoing transitional justice process.
