Heavy rainfall forecast in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki
KATHMANDU:- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged the public to take necessary precautions as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the country on Sunday and Monday (July 12 and 13).
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), a few places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as one or two places in the Tarai areas of Madhes Province and the Tarai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the period.
The department issued a warning bulletin on Saturday and forecast extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.
Authorities have warned that the expected rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides, riverbank erosion, debris flows and inundation in urban areas and the Tarai. It has also urged the public to remain alert and make necessary preparations in advance.
People travelling along rivers, streams and flash flood-prone areas, as well as residents living in landslide-prone settlements and along riverbanks, have been advised to exercise extra caution.
The authority has also asked all three security agencies, local governments, volunteers and other concerned bodies to remain on standby for emergency response operations.
Heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators and loaders have been advised to be kept ready in vulnerable highways and road sections to facilitate immediate response in case of disasters.
Partner organisations supporting preparedness and response activities have been requested to stay in close coordination with District Disaster Management Committees and Local Disaster Management Committees.
The authority has urged the public to save emergency hotline numbers on their mobile phones –1155 for rainfall and flood information, 1234 for disaster assistance, 100 for Nepal Police and 1114 for the Armed Police Force, Nepal and to contact them whenever necessary.
