Ronaldo and Georgina postpone wedding date as Portugal’s World Cup tour ends
LOS ANGELES:-The highly anticipated wedding of global football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodríguez has once again stirred up a buzz across international media and social media platforms.
Although major media outlets had reported that the couple was set to tie the knot in the third week of Shrawan (early August 2026), recent updates suggest that these plans are currently in limbo.
It was reported that this famous couple, who had been in a relationship since 2016, officially got engaged in August 2025.
Subsequently, reports emerged that they planned to get married immediately after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
British newspaper The Sun and Portuguese media outlets claimed that a grand wedding ceremony for Ronaldo was set to take place on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the 511-year-old Funchal Cathedral in his hometown of Madeira, Portugal.
For the wedding reception, several floors and bars at the luxury five-star Savoy Palace Hotel in Madeira were closed off for a completely private event on August 7 and 8.
Since the new season for the Saudi club Al-Nassr was set to begin on August 15, the first week of August was considered an ideal time for Ronaldo to get married before returning to Saudi Arabia.
However, *The California Post* reported that the reality turned out to be quite the opposite of those sensational media claims.
When Portuguese television presenter Adriano Silva spoke with Ronaldo’s sisters, Katia and Elma Aveiro, they flatly denied reports that Ronaldo was getting married this year. According to his sister Katia, the wedding plans have been either postponed or rescheduled for the time being.
Upon directly contacting the Funchal Cathedral—the alleged venue—it was found that no wedding had been booked in the name of either Ronaldo or Georgina.
If the world’s most-followed athlete were getting married in just a few days, one would expect extensive preparations to be underway. However, following Portugal’s World Cup exit, Ronaldo and Georgina have been seen enjoying a holiday with their five children on a yacht and at the beach in Mallorca, Spain—making it clear that they are in no rush to tie the knot.
In a previous interview with journalist Piers Morgan, Ronaldo revealed that he had proposed to Georgina with a £1.5 million ring and expressed a desire to hold the wedding alongside the World Cup trophy should Portugal win the tournament.
However, international sports media have reported that after Portugal was eliminated in the Round of 16 or the quarter-finals, Ronaldo postponed the wedding, feeling that tying the knot on the originally planned date would feel hollow—akin to celebrating someone else’s victory.
