Sydney Sweeney faces criticism on social media over advertising controversy

LOS ANGELES:- Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney, known for *The Handmaid’s Tale*, has once again found herself embroiled in controversy over an advertisement. Some social media users have criticized her new ad for the sports trading app ‘NoVig,’ describing it as “obscene” and claiming that it portrays women in a “sexualized manner.”

Sweeney, the 29-year-old recently seen in *Euphoria* Season 3, has covered her body with various pieces of sports equipment in the advertisement’s photos and videos. A debate has sparked on social media following the release of the photoshoot, which features items such as a football, basketball, hockey pads, and a tennis racket.

Sweeney posted photos and videos of the advertisement on Sunday. By the time this report was prepared, the post had garnered over two million likes and more than 28,000 comments.

The post went viral immediately after being shared. While some users criticized the concept of the advertisement, some women involved in sports also commented on it, describing it as a campaign that sexualizes the female body.

Commenting on Sweeney’s post, a female Instagram user wrote, “As a former athlete and a woman who has herself faced sexualized comments, I feel a deep sense of loathing and disappointment regarding this campaign. We have struggled for years to be recognized and respected for our talent, strength, and achievements—not to be reduced merely to our bodies…”

Sweeney has not directly responded to the criticism. However, she has taken a subtle dig at the backlash by sharing photos from similar past shoots featuring various famous athletes on her Instagram story.

Previously, Sweeney also faced criticism regarding an advertisement for the denim brand ‘American Eagle’.
