Nepali-origin police officer Bikash Bharati honored with Australia’s National Bravery Award
SYDNEY:- Bikash Bharati, a police officer of Nepali origin, has been awarded a national bravery award for his courageous actions during a shooting incident in Sydney, Australia.
Senior Constable Bharati, who serves with the New South Wales (NSW) Police, received the 2026 National Bravery Award for the courage he demonstrated during a shooting incident that took place in Croydon Park, Sydney, in October 2025.
The Police Federation presented him with the award at a ceremony held on Wednesday in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Bharti serves with the Burwood Police Area Command.
Bharti was among the first police officers to arrive at the scene during a shooting incident on October 5, 2025. Although he himself came under fire during the incident, he ensured that a junior colleague reached a safe location. Furthermore, he also assisted in the rescue of injured civilians.
Upon receiving the award, Bharati remarked that when he first arrived in Australia from Nepal in 2015, he had never even imagined receiving such an honor.
“Although my name is on the award, police work is never the result of a solo effort,” he said. “The support, training, and trust of my colleagues played a crucial role in the work that led to this recognition. Therefore, I wish to share this honor with them as well.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also praised Bharati’s courage and dedication to duty in the Federal Parliament.
Bharati expressed that he feels fortunate to serve the country that welcomed him and provided him with the opportunity to contribute to society. He stated that he takes pride in wearing the police uniform and working alongside dedicated colleagues.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has also praised Bharati’s courage. He stated that during the dangerous incident in Croydon Park, Bharati prioritized the safety of others over his own.
