Nepali-origin Chapagain elected in Maryland primary election

BALTIMORE:-Nepali origin Satish Chapagain has won the Democratic primary for the House of Delegates representing District 7A in the U.S. state of Maryland.

Chapagain had run as a Democratic candidate in the primary election for Maryland’s District 7A.

This is a primary election within his own party. With 99 percent of the votes counted following the election held on June 23, Chapagain secured second place, surpassing two other competitors.

He received 2,718 votes out of a total of 10,402 votes cast. With this victory, Chapagain will now have to face Republican candidates in the election this coming November.

His major priorities are ‘Affordable Maryland, Safe Communities, and Strong Businesses.’ He has placed controlling the rising cost of living, building a safe society, and further strengthening local businesses at the center of his election agenda.

Chapagain is currently an elected Central Committee member of the Democratic Party in Maryland, a role that further highlights his active engagement and experience in local politics.

Alongside his political involvement, he is equally active in the social, educational, and business sectors.

In addition to being an established small business owner, he works as an interpreter for Baltimore County Public Schools and has held leadership roles in various social and community organizations.

Chapagain claims to have consistently advocated for public participation and social justice, prioritizing the voices of working-class families and vulnerable groups and communities.

He presents himself as a leader who works in direct contact with the community and seeks practical solutions.

It is noted that, alongside his involvement in politics and social service, Chapagain is also active in the literary sphere. Promotional materials identify him as an editor, poet, and lyricist, reflecting his multifaceted personality. Having served twice as the Media Coordinator for NRNA America, Chapagain currently holds the position of advisor.

Chapagain’s candidacy is viewed as a positive sign amidst the growing participation of people of Nepali origin in local politics in the United States.

It is believed that his candidacy will not only mark a personal political journey but also significantly strengthen the representation and participation of the Nepali community.
