Minister Mehta pledges all necessary care for injured medical officer, hospital staff demonstrate demanding workplace safety
KATHMANDU:- Medical officer at Narayani Hospital in Birgunj, Dr Pramod Ram, who was severely injured in an attack, was brought to Kathmandu. He has been admitted to the National Trauma Centre.
Minister for Health and Food Safety, Nisha Mehta, visited the injured medical officer on Monday to inquire about his health condition. During the visit, she directed the medical professionals and the hospital administration to leave no stone unturned in ensuring his better treatment.
Meanwhile, the Ministry said that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure the injured medical officer receives specialist treatment. The Minister expressed the government’s commitment to providing all necessary support for his treatment.
The Ministry has said that its serious attention has been drawn to the vandalism at the Narayani Hospital and the assault on the medical professional. Reminding all that there is an existing legal provision to investigate any untoward incident that occurs during treatment, the Ministry said that any act of violence or attempt to take the law into one’s own hands is unacceptable.
The Ministry has urged the local administration to identify those responsible for the assault and address the incident in accordance with the law. Minister Mehta also urged doctors and health workers to continue with their regular duties and services, calling on all parties concerned to ensure a safe environment in hospitals.
According to her, violence against health workers is unacceptable for any society. The Minister said the necessary legal and administrative measures would be taken effectively to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Meanwhile, health professionals at Narayani Hospital staged a protest demonstration at the local Ghantaghar on Monday, demanding action against those responsible for the assault on Dr Ram. Raj Kumar Patel, 45, of Birgunj Metropolis-25, died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Accusing the doctors of negligence in his treatment, his relatives attacked the medical officer and vandalised the hospital infrastructure. The agitating health professionals have demanded workplace safety and justice for the injured medical officer. The hospital has formed a committee to investigate the incident.
