Cyclone ‘Arnav’ begins to affect Nepal’s weather

KATHMANDU:- The powerful cyclone ‘Arnav’, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, made landfall on Wednesday along the coastal areas of Visakhapatnam and Yanam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone is causing heavy rainfall and storms across various parts of India. Meanwhile, another strong low-pressure area has formed in the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal.

According to meteorologist Binu Maharjan of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal is experiencing cloud cover, with light rain occurring in a few places within Lumbini Province. She stated, “The impact of the cyclone in Nepal will intensify through Kartik 13 and 14; as heavy snowfall accompanied by blizzards is expected in the high Himalayan regions, emergency response measures may be required.”

Due to a cyclone, the Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces are expected to experience extremely heavy snowfall—potentially reaching 100% coverage—prompting the department to urge a complete suspension of human settlement activities and tourism-related operations in these areas for the next three days.

A ‘red alert’ has been issued for these regions. Meteorologist Nishtha Niraula stated that the hilly and Terai regions are also expected to see moderate to heavy rainfall. She added, “There is a possibility of rain accompanied by strong winds in areas near Bihar, India.”
