Israeli Embassy Observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU:- The Embassy of Israel in Kathmandu marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday with a special memorial programme. Observed annually on January 27 under a United Nations initiative, the day honours the memory of the six million Jewish men, women, and children killed during the Holocaust.

The event, organised under the global initiative “Zikaron BaSalon – Memory in the Living Room”, featured messages and recorded testimonies from Holocaust survivors, including Sophia Geller. Israeli Ambassador to Nepal, Shmulik Arie Bass, described the Holocaust as a dark chapter in human history and emphasised the importance of remembering the tragedy to prevent hatred, racism, and genocide.

Top Bahadur Magar, Chairperson of Nepal’s National Human Rights Commission, highlighted the Holocaust’s lessons and its role in shaping modern human rights laws, calling for dignity, tolerance, and respect for human rights.

The programme was attended by diplomats, government officials, civil society members, and students. Cultural performances by Nepali students added a reflective touch, reinforcing the message of hope and remembrance.

Concluding the event, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to Holocaust education and the promotion of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect, underlining that remembering the past is vital for a more humane future.
