Youth detained over social media abuse against PM Balendra Shah handed to family

KATHMANDU:- A youth arrested for posting abusive remarks about Prime Minister Balendra Shah on social media has been released to his family after legal procedures were completed.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the individual was investigated on cybercrime charges with approval from the District Court in Panchthar. Following due process, authorities handed him over to his family.

In a statement, Ministry spokesperson Anand Kafle said the government remains committed to protecting freedom of expression and press freedom as enshrined in the Constitution. However, he emphasised that citizens must exercise these rights responsibly and maintain civility in public discourse.

The Ministry also warned that actions such as inciting public unrest, making personal insults, or using abusive language are punishable under existing laws.
