ICE arrests nearly 10,000 immigrants in 5 days
LOS ANGELES:- Immigration officials have taken 10,000 people—alleged to be residing illegally in the United States—into custody over a five-day period.
According to sources, a large number of arrests have taken place across the United States since last week.
According to sources, the new target for immigration officials is to apprehend at least 2,000 people per day in the coming days. Last year, during a meeting with senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, senior officials from the White House and the Department of Homeland Security issued a directive to set a target of 3,000 apprehensions per day.
DHS spokesperson said in a statement, “From day one, DHS law enforcement has been fulfilling President Trump’s promise to the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal immigrants—including murderers, rapists, child sex offenders, gang members, and terrorists.”
As part of immigration enforcement efforts, President Donald Trump has pledged to target the “worst” criminal offenders among the nation’s immigrant population. While the criminal histories of those arrested in this latest sweep are not yet clear, a DHS spokesperson stated that “approximately 70% of those arrested by ICE are undocumented immigrants who have been charged with or convicted of crimes in the United States.”
According to sources, recent arrests have been carried out with little publicity, following a policy adopted by DHS Secretary Markven Mullin during his confirmation hearing earlier this year to keep the agency out of the headlines and have it operate quietly.
Mike Howell, head of a Trump-backed oversight project and leader of the Mass Deportation Coalition, praised the arrest figures but called for “transparency and meaningful metrics” regarding deportation-related data, which are not currently publicly available.
