“I will build a political party that citizens can trust,” says President Thapa

LALITPUR:- Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed his commitment to developing the party into a trusted center of public confidence—an institution capable of leading ideological and social movements.

Speaking after taking the oath of office—administered by the party’s Central Election Committee at the central office in Sanepa today—he stated that democracy, human dignity, and social justice would serve as the core foundations of the party.

“Over the next four years, we will prioritize the issues and problems faced by citizens—placing them above the party’s internal activities. We will develop the Congress into an ideological force capable of addressing the questions of contemporary Nepali society and modernize our organization. We plan to engage everyone—from the youth to farmers—in social movements. Furthermore, I wish to commit to moving forward by embracing all perspectives within the party—whether in agreement or disagreement—and to ensuring that the leadership remains transparent and accountable,” he said.

Stating that the position of Chairperson is a responsibility rather than a source of authority, he argued that the party should not have to bear the burden if he makes a mistake. He clarified that individuals themselves must take responsibility for their own shortcomings.

He informed that the Congress has decided not to celebrate Dashain with any pomp or extravagance this year, given that many families are currently in mourning and facing hardship due to recent natural disasters. He urged party leaders, cadres, and the general public to observe the festival in solidarity with those affected by the disasters—including families who have lost loved ones—and to uphold social harmony.

Prem Bahadur Khadka, Senior Advocate and Coordinator of the Election Committee, stated that the election was successfully conducted despite the tight schedule. He noted that, for the first time in the history of the Nepali Congress, conventions have been held across all 165 electoral constituencies, paving the way for the central general convention.

He urged the newly elected Chairman, Thapa, to move forward in a manner that would enable him to steer the country away from the growing political indiscipline, work toward the preservation of national sovereignty, and ensure the protection of human rights—including the right to live with dignity.
