Floodwaters from Narayani River enter the settlement, most of houses in Susta submerged

The local administration has reported that citizens are being moved to safe locations using suspension bridges and boats. Currently, a joint team comprising the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force is deployed in the affected areas to rescue families at further risk.

NAWALPARASI:- Due to flooding in the Narayani River caused by continuous, heavy rainfall, the majority of the 311 households in Susta—located in Susta Rural Municipality-5, West Nawalparasi—have been inundated as floodwaters entered the settlement.

According to local resident Munsi Harijan, the impact of the flood began in Tharu Tol and spread through Sainik Tol and Pahadiya Tol, reaching as far as Badka Tol. In Tharu Tol alone, 10 to 11 houses have collapsed, while the collapse of mud-and-thatch houses and trees continues in Badka Tol. The entire Susta settlement is submerged.

Schools, a health post, a police station, and an Armed Police Force (APF) Border Outpost (BOP) have been inundated. Erosion caused by the Narayani River has washed away soil from the embankment, weakening the structure and creating a risk of the dam breaching.

According to West Nawalparasi’s Chief District Officer (CDO) Deepak Raj Nepal, security agencies are fully prepared and deployed to bring all at-risk residents of Susta to the mainland side and place them in safe shelters.

According to him, a joint rescue team comprising the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police has already reached Susta to safely rescue the residents and bring them to the other side. The rescue team is continuously accessing the affected area and bringing citizens to safety.

“We are making efforts to relocate all residents of Susta to schools in safe locations on this side of the area. However, a problem has arisen because the majority of the residents are unwilling to leave their homes and villages to move here,” said Chief District Officer Nepal.

The local administration has reported that citizens are being moved to safe locations using suspension bridges and boats. Currently, a joint team comprising the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force is deployed in the affected areas to rescue families at further risk.

Seventy-five at-risk households have been rescued and taken to a holding center in Susta, where approximately four hundred people are currently sheltering. The remaining residents of Sainik Tol have sought shelter in concrete houses and the Badka Tol area.
