Experts suggested that the government should engage in more vigorous dialogue with India on trade and labor-related issues to create an environment for self-employment and productive employment within Nepal.
GENEVA:- Diplomats and subject experts working in various international organizations in Geneva, Switzerland have urged the government not to close Nepali embassies in South Africa, Denmark and Brazil.
The subject experts and diplomats made this point at a meeting organized by the Nepali embassies and missions with Minister for Youth, Labor and Employment Ramzi Yadav, who is in Geneva to participate in the 114th session of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
They said that such decisions could have a long-term impact on Nepal’s presence and diplomatic influence in important international organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the United Nations, and the International Labor Organization. They said that it could also have a negative impact on relations with BRICS member countries Brazil and South Africa, in particular.
‘Why was a decision made without a study that would put the Geneva mission in trouble tomorrow?’ they asked.
In response, Minister Yadav said that he would return to Nepal and brief Prime Minister Balendra Shah on the issues raised. He said that the concerned experts can also bring this to the attention of the Prime Minister.
In another context, Minister Yadav said that the government is moving forward in the next 10 years to increase domestic employment, connect youth to the global labor market, and control fraud in foreign employment through the use of technology.
Minister Yadav said that the government has a plan to regulate labor migration only to countries where Nepali workers are assured of fair wages and respect and to prevent youth migration by creating employment within the country. He informed that preparations are underway to remove the necessary legal and policy obstacles for that.
According to Nepali Ambassador to Geneva Ram Prasad Subedi, 14 bilateral meetings have been held in various phases during the conference. In these meetings, discussions were held with ministers and ambassadors of various countries that send Nepali workers on the rights and interests of workers.
