307 animals, including buffalo, rescued after snowfall
HUMLA:- More than 300 animals—including ‘chauri’ (yaks/hybrids)—that had gone missing during a snowfall while grazing in the high pastures of Limi (a village located beyond the main Himalayan range in Namkha Rural Municipality-6) have been rescued.
A search team, led by Limi Ward Chairperson Paljor Tamang, discovered the animals safe and sound near the Sankya Khola (stream) in the Lapcha area. The Ward Chairperson stated that upon reaching the Lapcha area with a group of local residents from Limi, they found 307 of the missing animals standing in the snow by the Sankya Khola; they were subsequently brought to safety at Tumling.
They had set out in four separate groups to search for the animals. According to him, the animals were found alive, even though all hope of their survival had been abandoned. The animals had gone missing following a snowfall that occurred on the 10th and 11th of Ashoj. He noted that the animals managed to survive for 27 days without any fodder, and that the rescue took place at a time when the villagers had already given up hope of finding them alive.
Among the animals located so far are 50 horses, 20 J’hopas’ (crossbreeds of yak and cattle), and 237 ‘Chauri Gai’ (yaks/yak-cattle hybrids). He mentioned that more animals might be found today, as three search teams are still out looking. None of the horses have tails, as they had eaten their own tails.
More than 300 animals had gone missing following heavy snowfall while they were grazing in the pastures of Gyau Khola and Ling Khola. The local residents of Limi are delighted that the animals have been found safe and sound.
Following the disappearance of a large number of livestock, Namkha Rural Municipality invited tenders to clear the snow accumulated on the road from Takchi to Gyau Khola to facilitate the search for the animals. Clearing the snow in that area has aided in the search for the missing livestock.
