Newa-flix launched as first Nepal Bhasa OTT platform

KATHMANDU:- The first over-the-top (OTT) platform dedicated to Nepal Bhasa content, Newa-flix, was officially launched at Kirtipur Cineplex on Saturday, marking a milestone for indigenous digital entertainment in Nepal.

Presented by Elohan Publications, the platform aims to stream Nepal Bhasa movies, songs, documentaries and short films. Organisers said it is not only the first Nepal Bhasa OTT platform but also Nepal’s first indigenous OTT initiative.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director of Elohan Publications, Naresh Bir Shakya, said the platform seeks to bring Nepal Bhasa cinema to a wider audience through technological advancement. He expressed confidence that the platform would enable global viewers to access Newari films easily and help elevate the status of Nepal Bhasa cinema.

Chairman of the Film Development Board, Dinesh DC, pointed out the importance of language and identity for cultural survival. He said digital platforms focused on indigenous content could play a vital role in preserving and promoting communities. He also committed necessary support from the board and the government for the overall growth of the platform.

Senior photographer Raj Bhai Suwal said the film distribution landscape had changed drastically over the years. Recalling that theatres once relied on a limited number of film prints based on the number of theaters, he said OTT platforms had now made films accessible to individuals worldwide. Additionally, he stressed the need for Nepal Bhasa filmmakers to maintain quality standards in line with contemporary demands and said that such platform could ensure a brighter future for the industry.

Cineplex operator Narendra Maharjan said Nepal Bhasa films are currently facing multiple challenges. He emphasised that collective efforts are needed for the growth and promotion of Nepal Bhasa cinema.

Chief Operating Officer of Elohan Publications, Darshan Bir Shakya, said the idea of a dedicated Nepal Bhasa OTT platform emerged in response to changing technology and viewing habits. He said the team had worked for around one-and-a-half years to realise the concept, adding that such initiatives could support the struggling Nepal Bhasa entertainment sector and contribute to the preservation and promotion of indigenous language and culture.

Organisers said the platform is expected to serve as a digital archive and distribution hub for Nepal Bhasa content, connecting global audiences with indigenous storytelling while supporting the preservation and promotion of Newa culture.
