LOS ANGELES:- Protesters have gathered in downtown Phoenix and are staging ongoing demonstrations against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Demanding the abolition of the federal agency ICE, the protesters are also calling for the arrest and prosecution of the officers who recently opened fire while stopping a vehicle.
Separately, a protest was held in Orlando on Saturday to oppose two deadly encounters involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Demonstrators staged a protest at Curry Ford Road and Semoran Boulevard, calling for justice, greater transparency, and changes to immigration enforcement practices.
People gathered at Civic Space Park in the city center to protest the recent deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo of Houston and Johan Sebastian Duran of Maine.
The protest took place just a day after a federal agency suspended vehicle stop operations following fatal shooting incidents.
President Donald Trump has directed the agency to continue the practice of stopping vehicles, describing it as an effective method for controlling crime.
In accordance with President Trump’s directive, a rule has been established stipulating that vehicles may be stopped only if at least one officer is wearing a body-worn camera.
According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, speaking on July 16, more than half of ICE field officers are equipped with body cameras, and the remaining officers will receive them within 60 days.
Leavitt said, “Our law enforcement professionals—whose well-being is paramount—are arresting illegal immigrants involved in criminal activity across the country; this includes individuals convicted of extremely heinous and violent crimes.”
Protesters have stated that both political parties are equally responsible for the ongoing deportation process.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, incidents of attacks on federal immigration officials have also increased.
