Nagdhunga tunnel set for full operation from Mid-July

KATHMANDU:- Preparations are underway for the full-scale operation of the Nagdhunga Tunnel from mid-July, which is expected to ease traffic flow in and out of the Kathmandu Valley.

The 2.68-kilometre, two-lane tunnel—the country’s first road tunnel—is expected to significantly reduce travel time along one of Nepal’s busiest highway corridors, offering relief to thousands of commuters and transport operators who regularly face congestion at Nagdhunga.

Project Director Saujanya Nepal said internal preparations are in the final stage and that most construction work inside the tunnel has been completed. He said emergency response drills, rescue simulations, and traffic management tests are being conducted to ensure operational readiness.

He added that the remaining work includes landslide prevention measures outside the tunnel, along with arrangements for toll collection systems and related infrastructure.

According to the project, toll payment options will include cash, QR codes, and an electronic toll system using vehicle-mounted stickers scanned by cameras. Revenue will be deposited in the Road Board Nepal account, while a private operator will handle daily management and collection.

The Yuxin-ART JV company has been awarded the Rs 1.1 billion contract to operate and maintain the tunnel for five years. Around 150 staff will be deployed for its operation.

The tunnel, once fully operational, is expected to handle more than 8,000 vehicles daily, excluding two-wheelers.
