Karnali Corridor flooded, traffic disrupted

The Road Division Office and related bodies have collected details of the damage and have started preparations for repair and reconstruction. However, it is said that it is a challenge to bring the road into operation immediately as the rain continues.

KALIKOT:- Landslides and erosion caused by continuous rains have caused major damage to the Karnali Corridor road section. Vehicular movement on the section has been completely stopped after a section of the road in the Kalikot section of the corridor collapsed and fell towards the Karnali River.

Passenger and freight vehicles have been stranded on the road after road walls, gabion nets and other structures collapsed due to the rain. Traffic movement has been completely halted as a large portion of the road has washed away towards the river.

According to local Prem Chaulagain, the incessant rains for the past few days had weakened the road. The road was completely closed after a significant portion of the road collapsed due to floods and landslides following the rains on Tuesday night. The road has been blocked, affecting the transportation of daily necessities, patient transportation, and local life. Even rural roads have been completely closed due to the rains.

The Road Division Office and related bodies have collected details of the damage and have started preparations for repair and reconstruction. However, it is said that it is a challenge to bring the road into operation immediately as the rain continues.

According to Police Inspector Ganesh Gyawali, Information Officer at the District Police Office, Kalikot, an excavator has been mobilized to clear the road. He said that although the time cannot be specified due to problems at many places, the repair work is ongoing.

Locals have demanded that the government adopt long-term conservation measures to control frequent landslides and erosion on strategically important roads like the Karnali Corridor. They allege that the government has repeatedly failed to maintain the road connecting the two countries.
