Dispute over immigration laws in Maryland: Clash between state government and police

BALTIMORE:- A senior police official in the U.S. state of Maryland has warned that the state’s new “sanctuary” law could allow dangerous illegal immigrants to return to the streets, posing a serious risk to public safety.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler has strongly opposed the ‘Community Trust Act,’ which restricts cooperation between local police and ICE. Gahler, who has forty years of law enforcement experience, has filed a lawsuit against the law in court alongside 16 other sheriffs.

Police state that they are being forced to release individuals from local jails—even those flagged as threats to public safety.

Citing the involvement of undocumented foreign nationals in the 2022 rape and murder of Kayla Hamilton and the 2023 killing of Rachel Morin, Gaehler emphasized that public safety must take precedence over politics.

Noting that the importance of information sharing between federal and local police was validated following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the sheriff alleges that the new law has once again created barriers to communication.

On the other hand, the office of Maryland Governor Wes Moore has refuted this claim. A spokesperson for the Governor clarified that violent crime in the state is declining and emphasized the state’s commitment to controlling criminal activity while upholding constitutional rights and the dignity of citizens—rather than having untrained federal agents tear families apart.
