California state government to offer tax breaks for the purchase of zero-emission vehicles

LOS ANGELES:- In the second quarter of 2026, Californians purchased 86,857 new zero-emission vehicles. This figure represents 19.1% of new car sales, marking the highest share of quarterly sales seen this year.

California is demonstrating that a state can lead in affordability and clean air, while building a future that does not rely on fossil fuels and the volatile price fluctuations associated with them.

As fuel prices skyrocket across the country due to the war involving Iran, California leads the nation in the purchase of zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure development. Regardless of what is happening in Washington, D.C., California is open for business: it is a safe, stable, and strong market partner.

And this momentum is set to accelerate further. An instant rebate program, established by the legislature and approved by Governor Newsom, is launching next month; under this initiative, 13 vehicle manufacturers will offer immediate rebates to first-time buyers of zero-emission vehicles.

“This is a very exciting time for those looking to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) in California,” said California Energy Commissioner Nancy Skinner. “Many affordable new and used EV models are available here, and the rebate program will give thousands of Californians the opportunity to move away from increasingly expensive fuel-powered vehicles. As California rapidly expands its reliable and publicly accessible ‘fast-charging’ network, there could be no better time to adopt electric vehicles.”

“About one in five Californians are choosing electric vehicles because driving an EV is fun and fast, and they also have lower fuel and maintenance costs,” said California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph. “The state’s new rebate program is making it easier for first-time buyers to make this switch. While federal actions put decades of progress at risk, California remains committed to protecting public health and ensuring clean air across the state.”

For California families who have been waiting for the right moment to adopt electric vehicles, that time is arriving later this summer. Under a new rebate program, a $3,500 discount will be available right at the dealership when purchasing a new electric vehicle. Participating vehicle manufacturers will match the State of California’s $135.5 million investment with an equal amount, ensuring total savings of $271 million for California families at the time of purchase.

The California Air Resources Board is overseeing this program. Detailed information regarding when the funds will become available and how to obtain them is expected next month.

Even though Donald Trump has attempted to cede the clean vehicle economy to China, California is ensuring that American workers and manufacturers can compete and succeed in the industries that will define this century.

In January, the state surpassed the milestone of 2.5 million total sales of zero-emission vehicles; this far exceeds its initial goal of selling 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles by 2025. Last September, San Bernardino County made history by launching the first hydrogen-powered passenger train for commercial service in North America.

In May, Governor Newsom launched a $1 billion rebate program for medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks, while in April 2025, he announced $500 million for 1,000 clean school buses across the state. Demand for incentives related to zero-emission buses and trucks is more than doubling each year.

In the latest update to the ‘Clean Transportation Program Investment Plan’—aligned with California’s commitments—the California Energy Commission has allocated $98.5 million for the development of infrastructure for light-duty zero-emission vehicles for the 2025–2026 fiscal year.
