California continues to welcome visitors coming to watch the Super Bowl, X Games, and Olympics

By Purushottam Dhakal, LOS ANGELES:- California has celebrated the successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup. With this success, the state has marked another significant milestone in its leading role of managing an unprecedented series of world-class sporting events.
California welcomed hundreds of thousands of sports fans from around the world by hosting 14 matches across two world-class stadiums. Throughout the FIFA World Cup, capabilities regarding coordinated planning, public safety, transportation, emergency response, and cybersecurity were demonstrated, ensuring the tournament’s successful execution.
With the successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup, California is also prepared for future events such as the Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We welcomed sports fans from across the globe, celebrated an incredible tournament, and proved that we are ready for future challenges. The FIFA World Cup was a significant milestone, and this is just the beginning as California prepares to welcome the world back for even more major sporting events.”
The FIFA World Cup tournament showcased California’s ability to safely welcome visitors from around the globe. By supporting local businesses and community celebrations, and fostering coordination among state agencies, local governments, transportation providers, emergency responders, federal partners, FIFA, host stadiums, and the ‘Bay Area’ and ‘Los Angeles’ organizing committees, California is preparing to deliver a world-class experience to spectators for this upcoming major sporting event.
A total of 14 FIFA World Cup matches were held in California, distributed between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.
More than 560,000 spectators attended the eight matches held at the Los Angeles stadium, while over 410,000 spectators attended the six matches at the San Francisco Bay Area stadium.
A total of 6.8 million spectators attended the 104 matches hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada; approximately 1,700 state public safety personnel were deployed in California.
Seven national teams—including the U.S. national team—used California as their ‘home base,’ while safe service was provided to approximately 700,000 public transit passengers.
Additionally, more than 100,000 spectators gathered at Los Angeles’ Exposition Park for the FIFA World Cup—an event estimated to have generated an economic impact of around $1.5 billion across the state.
More than a year before the start of the FIFA World Cup tournament, California had mobilized various state and local government agencies to support host communities through coordinated planning, emergency management, transportation, cybersecurity, and public safety initiatives.
State agencies worked with local governments, federal partners, FIFA, regional transportation providers, venue operators, and host cities to prepare for every aspect of the tournament. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, California Transportation Agency, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Transportation, Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development,
Similarly, integrated coordination among the California National Guard, California Department of Social Services, California State Parks, California Public Utilities Commission, California Department of Consumer Affairs, California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, California Department of Public Health, Government Operations Agency, and many other state partners succeeded in providing safe service to hundreds of thousands of fans.
Through the California Cybersecurity Integration Center and the State Threat Assessment Center, Cal OES monitored cyber and physical threats around the clock, exchanged real-time information with federal, international, and private-sector partners, pre-deployed emergency response resources, and coordinated communications with local agencies, foreign consulates, and partner organizations to ensure rapid response capabilities throughout the competition.
In addition, CalSTA coordinated a statewide transportation plan in collaboration with transit agencies, host cities, and rideshare service providers to manage the movement of fans. This effort supported an estimated 700,000 public transit users, strengthened “first-mile” and “last-mile” connections, and helped millions of visitors travel efficiently throughout the competition.
The California Highway Patrol deployed approximately 400 personnel—including air operations, K-9 units, special response teams, bicycle patrol officers, and traffic control officers—and collaborated with local, federal, and international law enforcement partners to carry out duties related to venue security, traffic management, and public safety.
Throughout the duration of the event, utilizing 823 personnel, 651 pieces of equipment, and 162 variable message signs, Caltrans teams continuously monitored highways, responded to incidents, repaired damaged infrastructure, cleared roadways, and provided real-time traveler information to ensure the safe and efficient operation of transportation corridors.
Go Biz coordinated business engagement and economic development efforts before and during the tournament, conducted outreach to local businesses, supported host communities, monitored economic impacts, and helped maximize the estimated $1.52 billion in statewide economic activity generated by the World Cup.
Overseeing commercial passenger transport companies across California and carrying out inspection and enforcement activities related to state regulations established to protect consumers, the CPUC deployed 21 transport enforcement officers.
With 140 agents deployed statewide, the ABC promoted responsible alcohol service, conducted compliance operations, educated licensed establishments, and helped prevent underage drinking, thereby contributing to a safe environment for fans and local communities.
CDSS prioritized providing resources for at-risk individuals, while CDPH deployed 139 staff members to monitor infectious diseases, climate-related events, bioterrorism threats, and medical surge capacity, thereby providing statewide situational awareness and public health coordination throughout the event.
Cal Guard deployed two Civil Support Teams specializing in hazardous material detection and response, thereby strengthening California’s all-hazards preparedness posture.
GovOps coordinated cross-agency operational support and administrative alignment to ensure state departments remained synchronized in their planning and operational activities.
Los Angeles’ ‘Exposition Park’ welcomed over 100,000 fans from California and around the world during the FIFA Fan Festival. In collaboration with security agencies, the state-owned venue ensured the safety of visitors without any major incidents. The ‘Fan Fest’ served as a successful test of the venue’s infrastructure ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
Local government bodies—specifically the ‘Bay Area Host Committee’ and the ‘Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee’—collaborated with the ‘Golden State’ (California) to serve as key coordinators among FIFA, state and local governments, venue operators, transportation agencies, businesses, and community organizations.
California leveraged this competition to strengthen international relations—an effort that included the exchange of scarves with the Consuls General of Canada and Mexico. The state demonstrated its commitment to global partnerships, cultural exchange, and future international collaboration extending beyond the competition itself.
The FIFA World Cup served as a significant operational milestone ahead of an unprecedented series of international sporting events. These events are expected to draw millions of visitors to California over the coming years.
In particular, upcoming events such as Super Bowl 2027, X Games 2027, and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games are expected to boost economic activity significantly, support local businesses, create jobs, and showcase California’s communities to billions of viewers worldwide.
