36,000 arrested for retail theft in California; $293 million worth of goods recovered
The homicide rate in California has dropped to 3.5 per 100,000 people—the lowest rate since statewide data collection began in 1966.
LOS ANGELES:- As California continues to crack down on organized retail theft through effective strategies and historic state investments, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that state-funded local enforcement efforts have resulted in 35,907 arrests, the referral of 28,667 cases for prosecution, and the recovery of over $293.4 million in stolen property.
In the most recent quarter alone, agencies arrested 3,294 suspects and recommended 2,824 cases for prosecution, while the volume of recovered stolen goods rose by 12.9%.
The Costa Mesa Police Department arrested an out-of-state suspect with an extensive criminal record while he was attempting to steal a $3,800 jacket from a high-end retailer. Following a lengthy pursuit, the suspect was arrested on charges of grand theft, obstruction, and organized retail theft.
The Los Angeles Police Department executed three search warrants related to an ongoing cargo theft investigation, resulting in the seizure of 84 stolen container chassis and 25 vehicles, as well as the recovery of goods valued at over $5 million—including multiple handguns, digital devices, and more than $300,000 in U.S. currency.
The San Francisco Police Department coordinated investigations into numerous retail theft suspects and expanded partnerships with local retailers. As part of the Governor’s historic legislation to address retail theft offenders, Penal Code Section 487(e) now enables the aggregation of offenses across multiple incidents, providing the police department with the necessary tools to tackle these crimes and hold those responsible accountable.
The Santa Monica Police Department recently celebrated the inauguration of the new Santa Monica Analytical Real-Time Center (SMART Center). The SMART Center represents a significant investment in keeping the community safe by strengthening the capacity to address organized retail crime.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has arrested individuals involved in multiple vehicle thefts. A lengthy and complex investigation has resulted in the recovery of stolen vehicles and evidence valued at over $1.3 million.
In January, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department conducted surveillance and an operation against a South American criminal group in Cerritos, resulting in the arrest of six individuals and the seizure of $60,000 in cash, jewelry, a safe, and purses.
The Placer County District Attorney’s Office utilized grant funds to investigate and successfully prosecute the individual responsible for a series of retail thefts targeting beauty stores and other retailers across multiple counties. The suspect wore a clown mask to intimidate and terrorize employees. Held responsible for the theft of at least $30,000, the suspect was convicted of a felony and sentenced to a term of less than ten years in state prison.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office used grant funds to investigate and prosecute the individuals responsible for a coordinated jewelry store robbery in Palm Desert. The suspects used hammers to smash display cases and steal merchandise worth more than $87,000.
The investigation linked the suspects to a criminal group responsible for at least eleven similar incidents. The suspects were convicted of various offenses, with one individual sentenced to five years in state prison.
The Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office highlighted the investigation into two individuals responsible for twelve felony thefts from a beauty retailer. Both were convicted and ordered to pay approximately $30,000 in restitution.
“This targeted state funding has provided local law enforcement and prosecutors with the resources needed to dismantle major criminal networks, securing over 35,000 arrests and leading to a steady increase in criminal prosecutions,” said BSCC Board Chair Linda Penner.
During the same month, individuals were arrested on charges of organized retail theft and illegal possession of firearms; additionally, stolen merchandise valued at $200,000 and nine firearms were recovered from nine affected retail stores.
In March, five individuals were arrested on charges of serious crimes following large-scale search and arrest operations conducted at various locations; three firearms, retail merchandise worth $8,595.14, and $1,514.00 in cash were seized during these operations.
