Grace Meng leads US House in silence in honor of Bhotekoshi flood victims
WASHINGTON:-A one-minute silence was observed during the House of Representatives session—led by Grace Meng, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and member of the House of Representatives—to honor the victims and survivors of the sudden floods in Nepal and Tibet, as well as those involved in rescue and relief operations.
Speaking at the ceremony held to observe a moment of silence, she said, “I stand here today to pay my respects to the victims of the devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet.”
She continued, “The scale of destruction is heart-wrenching. This terrible tragedy has claimed the lives of approximately one thousand people, destroyed homes and livelihoods, and left families grieving the loss of their loved ones.”
“As search and rescue operations continue in the area, we pray for the safe rescue of the more than 4,000 people—including an estimated 90 U.S. citizens—who remain missing following this disaster.
“As we face this grave tragedy, we are committed to supporting Asian American communities across the United States—and especially those residing in my district in Queens, New York—and we stand with everyone affected, both at home and abroad.”
