21 people killed across the country due to floods, landslides

KATHMANDU:- Twenty-one people have died across the country due to floods, landslides, and inundation caused by incessant rainfall since Thursday.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, five people are missing and five have been injured in these disasters as of this evening.

A total of 747 families have been directly affected by floods and landslides. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall occurred in various parts of the country starting from the 8th of Ashwin due to a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal. The authority reported that approximately 2,000 residents from the affected districts, who were at risk from floods and landslides, have been relocated to safer locations over the past four days.

Necessary arrangements and relief measures have been made for the rescued individuals through local authorities, in coordination with the respective district administrations. Shanti Mahat, spokesperson for the Authority, stated that helicopters were used to rescue people stranded by floods and landslides in districts including Jajarkot, Myagdi, and Baglung. The disaster has resulted in the complete destruction of 143 houses and partial damage to 51 others.

The Authority stated that it sent over 5,000 SMS messages to frontline personnel and others as part of disaster preparedness, while the Flood Forecasting Division sent 814,000 SMS messages to local residents in areas potentially affected by floods.

Over a period of four days, total rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters was recorded at 186 stations across the country. The highest rainfall—544.2 millimeters—was recorded at Dedhgaun in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East). Similarly, 500.2 millimeters of rainfall was recorded at Panchase in Kaski, and 472 millimeters at Atraulitar in Tanahun.
