‘Unregistered social media platforms to be deactivated from today’

KATHMANDU:- Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that social media platforms that have not been listed till today will be deactivated in the country.

Speaking to journalists at his Ministry today, Minister Gurung said that he has already instructed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to deactivate unlisted social media. The Supreme Court had ordered the Government to register domestic and foreign online and social media platforms with the relevant bodies before allowing their operation in the country.

In compliance with the order, the meeting of the Council of Ministers had called on individuals, companies or organizations interested in operating social media platforms in Nepal to register.

According to the Directives to manage the use of social media, 2080, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had asked the applicants to submit an application within 7 days for listing of their platform in the format specified in Schedule 1 of the same directives. Minister Gurung said, ‘The Nepal Telecommunication Authority has been instructed to deactivate social media platforms not listed within the specified time and reactivate it from the moment it is listed.’

‘We had asked them to register within seven days, the deadline was until today, we will deactivate the social media platforms from today itself,’ he said.
