Intel awards two Indian-American professors for AI innovation
SAN FRANSISCO:- Intel Corporation has selected Indian-American professors Vijay Raghunathan and Vishvesh Sathe for the 2025 Outstanding Researcher Award under an academic initiative aimed at advancing semiconductor technology and artificial intelligence. The award recipients are Vijay Raghunathan of Purdue University and Vishvesh Sathe of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Professor Vijay Raghunathan of Purdue’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering was honored for his research on multi-modal systems and heterogeneous AI processing.
His project focuses on coordinating tasks among Central Processing Units (CPUs), Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), and Neural Processing Units (NPUs). By streamlining communication across these specialized processing engines, his team succeeded in improving performance and energy efficiency for multi-modal workloads, vision-language architectures, and state-space networks.
Raghunathan completed his foundational education in India, earning a bachelor’s degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He later moved to the United States for graduate studies, obtaining both a master’s degree and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
In addition to his research laboratory at Purdue, he serves as the university’s Vice President for Global Partnerships and Programs, fostering academic ties between U.S. institutions and Indian universities, including dual-degree initiatives with IIT Madras.
Visvesh Sathe, an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, was recognized for his research on runtime thermal management in 3D system-on-chip architectures.
Researcher Sathe developed compact, digital temperature sensors powered by the supply voltage (Vdd) that feature high precision and simplified single-point calibration. Validated on physical test chips, the technology enables integrated circuits to monitor dynamic thermal changes while maintaining energy efficiency.
Both researchers obtained their initial undergraduate engineering degrees from top Indian Institutes of Technology before pursuing their PhDs in the United States, where their current work contributes to high-performance computing hardware.
