Famous Nepali folk rock band ‘Nepathya’ performs in Korea

SEOUL:-  Marking the occasion of South Korea’s major festival ‘Chuseok’, the renowned Nepali folk-rock band ‘Nepathya’ brought together thousands of Nepalis residing there through their musical performance. The concert—marking the band’s sixth visit to South Korea—concluded successfully on Friday.

There was a massive turnout at the concert held at the state-of-the-art ‘KINTEX Hall’ near the capital, Seoul. Trains on the GTX line leading to the venue were packed with Nepali fans, while organizers and Korean security personnel struggled to manage the crowd inside the hall.

Singer Amrit Gurung himself had to urge the audience to remain calm after a massive crowd surged toward the front of the stage. The organizers stated that this level of audience participation—witnessed within an indoor venue during the band’s three-and-a-half-decade-long journey—was the largest since their performance at Wembley Arena in the UK.

The concert opened with the song “Koshi ko Pani Yo Jindagani.” During the performance, the band’s lead singer, Amrit Gurung, expressed deep sorrow over the damage caused by the recent floods in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.

“Our society, which flourished alongside river civilizations, has recently come to fear those very rivers due to climate change,” said singer Gurung. “In this time of disaster, it is essential to unite for immediate relief. Please contribute whatever you can to the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund.”

During the two-hour musical program, Amrit kept the audience constantly dancing as he performed a mix of old and new folk-rock songs. Popular tracks, including “Chari Maryo Sisai Ko Golile,” were performed with fresh arrangements and vocal improvisations.

Audience members have commented via social media that the concert was excellent and evoked a sense of patriotism. Stalls serving traditional Nepali food were also set up at the venue.

Local organizer Suresh Limbu stated that the concert was historic in terms of both quality and audience participation. Similarly, Lee Jo-yung—a representative of the Korean company ‘DS Mediatech,’ which handled technical management—praised the professionalism of the Nepali team and expressed a desire for future collaboration.

On stage, Amrit was accompanied by Dhruva Lama on drums, Subin Shakya on bass guitar, Neeraj Gurung on guitar, Shanti Rayamajhi on madal, and Dineshraj Regmi on keyboards.

The band returned to Nepal on Saturday after concluding the concert. According to the organizers, Nepalaya, Nepathya’s next concert is scheduled for October 4 in Dubai, UAE. Following that, concerts are planned for seven major cities in Nepal, Sikkim (India), and various cities across Australia later this year.
