Digital technology and female officers prioritized at Nepali Congress general convention

KATHMANDU:-  The Central Election Committee of the Nepali Congress has decided to prioritize digital technology and the appointment of female election officers to ensure the upcoming 15th General Convention is conducted in a technology-friendly, transparent, and impartial manner.

A meeting held on Sunday at the party’s central office in BP Nagar, Lalitpur—chaired by Committee Coordinator and Senior Advocate Prem Bahadur Khadka—adopted a four-point decision aimed at completing the General Convention within the scheduled timeframe, while also calling for constructive cooperation from stakeholder groups. The committee has also stated that it will submit the said decisions to the Central Working Committee for information.

The meeting has set a goal to maximize the use of technology during the 15th Central General Convention. A statement issued by Member Secretary Raju Katuwal notes that, as part of this initiative, priority will be given to digitizing the election process—specifically by adopting paperless technology or Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Similarly, as the election code of conduct comes into effect once the election process begins, the committee has urged all levels and bodies—including the Central Working Committee—to strictly adhere to the code of conduct throughout the election period, except where the statutes provide otherwise.

To promote inclusivity and women’s participation, the committee has decided to prioritize the deployment of female legal professionals as election officers across the Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur districts of the Kathmandu Valley—covering all 15 electoral constituencies, as well as the metropolitan and municipal areas within these districts.

The statement indicates that a roster will be prepared by inviting legal practitioners and other professional groups willing to assist as volunteers in streamlining the election process. The committee has clarified that individuals included in this roster will undergo the necessary orientation programs and be deployed as election officers. The committee has decided to move forward by incorporating the experience, opinions, and suggestions of the coordinators, members, and election officers who previously served on the election committee, with the aim of ensuring the dignity of the general convention.
