Government to provide Rs 35 million subsidy for Nepali film production

KATHMANDU:- The government is set to provide grants of up to 35 million rupees (3.5 crore) across various categories for film production. The Ministry of Information and Communications issued a notice today, inviting interested individuals and organizations to submit applications.

Applications, accompanied by the necessary documentation, must be submitted within 21 days from the date the notice was issued. It has been stated that this special grant is intended to encourage the production of original films. It is expected that this initiative will contribute to the promotion of local art, culture, lifestyle, and tourism.

Recently, the ‘Procedure for Providing Incentive Grants for the Production of Films of Cultural and National Importance, 2083’ was approved.

In accordance with this, those wishing to produce a film may submit an application, provided they meet the specified criteria. Separate grants can be obtained for screenwriting, production, and post-production. Consequently, a single film can receive a total grant of up to 9.5 million rupees.

Grants of up to 500,000 rupees for screenplay writing, up to 7 million rupees for production, and up to 2 million rupees for post-production are available.

For screenplay writing, a maximum of five films can receive grants. Similarly, up to three films can receive grants for production, while five films can receive grants for post-production.

What kind of films is the state planning to provide such grants for? Specific criteria and conditions have been established for this purpose. It has been stated that such grants will be provided to films of cultural and national significance.

For this, an original and distinct story will be required. The story must be one that, in some way, contributes to upholding the nation’s sovereignty, national unity, and social harmony. It should be a story that highlights or promotes the country’s history, tourism, and culture. A film that embodies social or national themes would be suitable for this purpose.

Those capable of translating these stories into visual language in an original and creative manner will be eligible to receive this grant. The film’s script must be registered with the Nepal Copyright Registrar’s Office.

The film must be shot using a 4K camera. The duration of the film must not exceed 90 minutes.

The grant funds cannot be used for the purchase of other equipment or materials. The use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the film production process is not permitted.
