Sandesh Baruwal Wins Himalayan 100 Edition-3 Chess Tournament
KATHMANDU:- The ‘Himalayan 100 Edition-3’ chess tournament—open to players with a rating below 1800—has concluded.
Sandesh Baruwal from Okhaldhunga secured first place in the two-day tournament, which was organized by the Himalayan Chess Academy, Thapathali, and held on Saturday at the Advanced College of Engineering and Management in Balkhu. Academy Director Yasir Khambu stated that Baruwal finished in the top spot with 8 points and received a prize of 10,000 rupees.
In the competition, Anjan Shrestha from Kavre secured second place with 8 points, winning a prize of 7,000 rupees, while Ramkumar Karki from Phutung, Kathmandu, finished third with 7.5 points, earning 4,000 rupees.
Similarly, Pratik Subedi from Jorpati, Kathmandu, placed fourth with 7 points and received 3,000 rupees. Santosh Gautam, Abhash Tiwari, Subhandip Thapa, Hardik Panta, Kabindra Shivakoti, and Ashish Gupta secured the fifth through tenth positions, respectively; they each received a prize of 2,000 rupees.
The best players from each province were also honored during the competition. Sunil Ghimire (Koshi), Bhola Chaudhary (Madhesh), Hem Bhandari (Bagmati), Ridham Bhattarai (Gandaki), Krishna Thapa Magar (Lumbini), Avin Pandey (Karnali), and Shubham Joshi (Sudurpaschim) were declared the best players and received Rs 1,500 each.
Similarly, Purna Narayan Awale was declared the best player from the Valley. Ganesh Bahadur Thapa was the top performer in the ‘Best Elo 1700’ category, while Shrivasan Dahal excelled in the ‘Best Elo 1600’ category. Each of these three players received a cash prize of Rs 1,000.
The tournament saw the participation of over 127 players from various districts, all with a rating below 1800. The organizers, Himalayan Chess Academy, stated that a total of Rs 50,000 in cash prizes was distributed to the winners and top-performing players.
As part of the competition, players under the age of 15 will compete on Sunday. A total of 100 players will vie for honors in this event.
