Nepali Congress will not accept any compromise regarding democracy: President Thapa

KASKI:- Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has stated that if the government, emboldened by its two-thirds majority, makes decisions that undermine democracy, the constitution, and citizens’ rights, the party will wage a struggle both in parliament and on the streets. He emphasized that the Nepali Congress would not accept any move that weakens the democratic system.

He said, “Although the government has the mandate to govern for its five-year term, it does not have the liberty to trifle with democracy and the rule of law. At times, the government makes ill-advised decisions while acting impulsively or getting carried away. In such moments, we do not react rashly; instead, we work to steady the country. We must not allow the nation to plunge into another abyss.”

Stating that safeguarding the supremacy of the Constitution and the democratic system is the Congress party’s primary responsibility, he declared that if democracy faces any threat, the party would resist it both in parliament and on the streets.

He added, “The Nepali Congress will not accept any compromise regarding democracy. We will fight wherever it is necessary. We will not allow any encroachment upon the rule of law and citizens’ rights.”

He stated that necessary reforms should be made after reviewing all aspects—including the constitution, laws, leadership, and implementation. He also emphasized the need to downsize the provincial government structure as required.

Noting that the Congress is a national force, he remarked that the party bears the responsibility of playing a restrained role to prevent any political crisis, conflict, or instability in the country.

He asserted that just as the Congress had previously saved the nation from crisis by bringing all parties together during the constitution-drafting process, it would continue to fulfill that same responsibility now.
